Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty, also known as vulval surgery, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to reduce the size of the labia minora – the flaps of skin on either side of the vaginal opening.

This surgery can be ideal for those women who do not like the look of their labia due to having noticeable skin folds around the opening of the vagina.

What does the procedure involve?

A labiaplasty can be done under general anaesthetic or a local anaesthetic with sedation.

It involves shortening or reshaping the vaginal lips. The unwanted tissue is cut away with a scalpel or laser. The loose edge may be stitched with fine, dissolvable stitches.

The whole surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours to complete, and you may discharge from the hospital the same day. It will take 1-2 weeks to recover, and your skin may take a few months to fully heal. During your recovery phase, you may experience some side effects, which are temporary and do not last long, such as soreness, swelling and bruising near the labia. Also, you may experience pain/discomfort while peeing or sitting.
