Also known as the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) or butt lift is a cosmetic surgery that involves removing fat from other areas of the body and re-injecting it into the buttocks. Buttock lift surgery is a type of fat graft or lipomodelling.-
What does the procedure involve?
The surgical procedure involves the following steps:
- Removing of fats – little nicks in the skin are made, and a thin tube is used to suck out small amounts of fat (like liposuction); the cuts are then closed with stitches.
- Preparing the fat – special equipment is used to separate the fat collected from any blood and other fluids.
- Administering the fat – small amounts of fat are injected into the area being treated; stitches are not usually needed.
The procedure usually lasts a couple of hours. You may be able to go home soon after the procedure is finished, or you may need to stay in the hospital overnight.
As the buttock holds a big area being treated, the entire treatment may need to be carried out over two or more sessions.
Procedural side effects
- Bruising and swelling
- Temporary numbness
- Small scars – these will lighten and fade with time
- Loss of some of the fat from the injected area during the first few months
Complications
- A collection of blood underneath the skin (haematoma)
- Death of fat tissue (fat necrosis)
- Air leaking into the space between your lungs and chest wall (pneumothorax)
- Thick and obvious scars – sometimes known as hypertrophic scars
The main concern from the Brazilian butt lift is that if this procedure is done incorrectly, the injected fat can enter the patient’s bloodstream and cause a blockage in the blood vessels in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), heart or brain, which can be fatal.
