Botox

Botox is a popular, non-surgical cosmetic treatment for facial lines and the rejuvenation of skin and underlying tissues. However, from a purely functional perspective, Botox can also be used to control muscle spasms, pain and excessive sweating.

How does Botox work?

Botox is commonly used for cosmetic purposes and primarily involves using a drug made from botulinum toxin, a powerful chemical agent that works by stopping the transmission of nerve impulses to the facial muscles that contract and cause wrinkles, such as frown lines between the eyebrows and crows’ feet around the eyes.

After receiving a Botox treatment, you may feel difficult/unable to frown or perform other basic muscle contractions. However, after about a week of getting Botox, you will feel that your facial wrinkles smooth out, giving you a more relaxed and youthful look.

How long does the Botox effect last?

This effect begins to wear off after two-to-three months, at which point the facial muscles start to work again, indicating that you need a Botox top-up.

There are five known types of Botulinum toxin (type A is more common). You should receive Botox from a legally authorised prescriber and get it administered by expert professionals only.
